I remember I lost one of my closest friends in 1967.  Doug reportedly died from complications after being in an automobile wreck on the Turnpike.  I was in the Navy at the time stationed in Washington, D.C., and thanks to David Runyon who drove me to the airport to catch a flight back to Kansas I could grieve with Doug's family and friends.  Doug is buried in the cemetary at 6th and Gage in Topeka.

Douglas and I both went to Potwin grade school and spent a lot of time together at each others houses and in the park across the street from Douglas's house. I always considered Douglas my best friend, then I moved away prior to 6th grade. I fondly remember playing Monopoly, overnight stays, playing in the creek and many other activities.

I was in college when I heard about his car accident. As I remember he was in the back seat at the time of the accident and had his seat belt on but somehow he got internal injuries from the seat belt. Whenever I think about my early years he is in my memories. He was missed.

Doug and I first met when four or five years old growing up in Potwin.  We remained close friends until I went off to school at OSU and Doug to Washburn.  In 1967 when Doug died, I was in the Navy flying in A-3s assigned to Heavy Attack Squadron 10 aboard the carrier USS Forrestal off the coast of North Vietnam.  Over 120 of my shipmates died in a fire aboard ship that summer, but I never thought that my friends back home might be in danger.  I was greatly saddened to learn of Doug's death several months later when I returned to the states.

Doug was a real car nut while growing up.  He had dreams of owning a Ferrari, Maserati or any other Italian sports car.  I feel sure he would have realized that dream if his life had not been cut short by such a freak accident.  He is missed.

I also considered Doug my best friend.  That's just the way Doug was. He just made you feel special.  I remember all the great times Doug, Tom Grimes, Larry Bast, Gary Carlson and myself had at THS and college; the trips to Garnett, KS for the auto races, making "home brew" in Grimes' basement (that's not the whole story), planning and performing those skits in THS assemblies, sitting with Grimes while he did his all night at KTOP-AM, Doug and I cutting blueprints for the Kansas State Highway Dept. part time in college.

Then I remember the sad times . . . Doug's death. It was a very hard time for all of us, but for me it was his funeral and being one of his pallbearers.  I didn't think I could get thru it.

Doug's mom called me the next day and asked me to come to see her.  I did and she wanted to give me his Phi Delta Theta ring. I'll never forget that.  I still have it to this day.  We miss you Doug.

Doug was a great friend. Always fun, always able to create a new activity. Great memories with Doug, Tom Grimes, Mike Gentry and Larry Bast. Skits during THS assemblies, physics class during lunch hour ("now, where can you use that outside of the classroom"), sports car races at Garnett, Friday nights at the DQ on 17th Street, drag racing down Topeka Blvd, Allen's drive-in. It was just like a cut out of American Graffiti.

I remember going to high school (THS, class of 62) with Doug and his sister.  I was working for the State of Kansas Photogrammetry and Photo Interpretation Sectiion in the State Office Building when I heard of Dougs passing in a car accident.  That was one of the times that a seat belt did this young man no justice.  You were such a sweet boy and had to leave us way too soon.  Rest in peace, Doug.
